Universal Tongue is a collectively researched project initiated by Anouk Kruithof, who worked with over 50 moving image researchers from all over the world to gather more than 8000 dance videos taken from Youtube and Instagram and small text descriptions about the various dance styles. The dance-videos are randomly ordered and developed into 10 new video compilations, which emphasize the MIX of all dances. Dance has developed an important part of our media culture globally throughout history and manifested itself online and repurposed found footage to find an interwoven common ground as a shared visual language.
The multi-channel video installation offers an opportunity to reflect on the various ways dance is in fact a universal language of sorts, defined and deployed by various subcultures, virally distributed across nations, cultural boundaries and continents.
Popping, Twerking, Flossing, Traditional Dancing, The Moonwalk or The Macarena; all are dance styles that can be found within millions of videos on YouTube. Approximately 300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute.
Dance creates connection between people and is a form of self-expression stimulating empowerment. These are universal reasons to have β€˜UNIVERSAL TONGUE’ developed in exhibition, YouTube channel, a website and book.
